cnet: technology infiltrates toylandNot everything showcased at Toy Fair was even really a toy, but that didn't make it any less cool for me. Boston-based start-up Mimoco displayed its fun and quirky Mimobots--designer USB flash-drives..."Our customers are all designers and artists," said Kristin Weckworth, owner of the Magic Pony, a boutique selling creative products in Toronto. "They're always using flash drives, and they love the idea of storing their stuff on these really cool little characters."Posted by mimoco at 10:24 PM February 17, 2006Boston Globe: Ninja PowerTech-savvy folks know that a USB drive is a portable memory stick used to store computer information. Designers at the Boston-based company Mimoco and the fashion experts at the Boston boutique Karmaloop know that these USB devices don't have to look so, well, industrial. Tonight, Karmaloop is unveiling a new line of USB drives designed to look like ''Wee Ninja" characters named ''Love" and ''Hate," designed by a Chicago artist. Is it necessary to have a memory stick that looks like a little ninja? Probably not. But it's adorable. There will be a free USB party tonight from 8 to 10:30 at Karmaloop. The drives range in price from $60 to $185, depending on the memory. Do you think it hurts the feelings of your important documents to be transported around in your dull, gray, lifeless USB flash memory? It certainly does. Just because they're random articulations of binary digits doesn't mean they're oblivious to the siren song of fashion, you know. Humor them for a bit with these mimobots, funky USB devices from Boston-based mimoco. Nine designs are available from these crazy guys, from the blood-soaked and downright nasty (but nice to data) Magma to the so-cute-you-wish-it-wasn't-just-a-hunk-of-plastic Jolibear. Prices start at $69.99 for the 256MB devices and go up for 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB models. Run to lab.mimoco.com, and give your files their time in the sun.
Part extraterrestrial, part extra data storage, mimobots are definitely not ordinary USB drives. The anime-inspired memory sticks are limited-edition designer toys meant to complement - rather than clutter - your desktop. Created by Evan Blaustein and his Brookline, Massachusetts-based mimoco, the two-inch tall 'bots look like fantastic characters from far-off planets. But pop off their heads and stick them into your Mac or PC's USB port and they're ready to serve you here on Earth, saving your text files, pictures, games - whatever - in their 256MB to 2GB brains. Mimoco plans to release new mimobots in small batches of 250 to 500 every two months. The latest series, which includes Galaxor (pictured), also comes preloaded with animated movies and mini-games from the UK-based Peskimo design studio.
