newsbuzzOctober 31, 2007mimobots the perfect gifts, sez WiredWhat do mimobots have in common with the Apple iPhone, Nintendo Wii, BlackBerry Pearl, and the Toyota Prius? They're all ultimate gifts, according to the most awesome of tech magazines! So we got our hands on the latest issue of Wired (one of our very favorite magazines, up there with Giant Robot and Beautiful Decay), and were shocked and amazed to see our very own R2-D2 mimobot from the Star Wars Series 1 mentioned as the ultimate gift... for a system administrator! "...this is for thwarting system failures and booting Linux off of any machine anywhere in your network, all the while showing off your geek cred with a little '80s droid action." We've gotta say, R2 is pretty cool; 'geek' cred is one thing, but remember that Star Wars is hawtness no matter who you are and the Star Wars Series 1 mimobots are doubly hawt. Check out the current issue, in stores now, to see what you should get for Paris Hilton, Leonardo DiCaprio, and other cool people - we still think it should be mimobots! EDIT: Hey, it's up on the Interweb! Check the story out here!

Mimobots are somewhat of a cross-breed of tech and Beanie Babies. They're created by designers and many are sold in very limited quantities. My Robo sample unit is number 69 out of 500, according to the handwritten designation on the package. And there's the uniqueness of these drives. They're not so much USB drives, as collectable art that can also be used to store your files. Read more! After all, everyone knows pirates are much cooler than ninjas. Interestingly, however, HERO's motto is "Hero is Love"; and the Wee Ninja X's mask says LOVE across the front, so may the two aren't so different after all. Or maybe the Wee Ninja x is really HERO in disguise. Or maybe they're just USB key toys - and if you had both of them you could make them fight to the death for Love dominance. Or you could just use them to store your data. It's your call.Shiny Shiny Posted by mimoco at 12:03 AM April 21, 2006gearlog: HERO mimobot is hereGearlog : HERO Mimobot Is Here! Tonight, Karmaloop is unveiling a new line of USB drives designed to look like ''Wee Ninja" characters named ''Love" and ''Hate," designed by a Chicago artist. Is it necessary to have a memory stick that looks like a little ninja? Probably not. But it's adorable. There will be a free USB party tonight from 8 to 10:30 at Karmaloop. Computer crash wiped out your data? Blame it on some alien life form sucking your hard drive's memory, if you must. Hopefully you've learned a lesson and are finally backing up your precious information. Now you can let those little space aliens work for you rather than against you. Mimobots, claiming to be creatures from the planet blooh (located in Galaxy 4210), are actually amazing-looking portable flash drives, adding some style to your USB port while giving you some peace of mind. $69.95 www.mimoco.com Posted by mimoco at 11:20 PM January 21, 2006penthouse: be@rbrick, qees, mimobot
These "designer toys" were all conceived by individual artists, have a unique style, and come in limited quantities. One of the newest, Mimobot, is certainly cool-looking, but it's also useful. Inside each of the eight different characters is a flash drive whose size ranges from 256 megabytes to one gigabyte... These computer critters feature the designs of Mexican artist Yahid Rodriguez and, at a little over two inches, they're smaller than a pack of gum. Though you'll be paying almost twice as much ($69.95 to $139.95) for these monsters as you would for a standard flash drive, the benefits are worth it. The Mimobots come with nine exclusive songs from drum-and-bass DJ DB, and feature a locking mechanism that ensures you won't lose the "top" of your flash drive. Up to 1,000 of each Mimobot will be produced, so unless you grab them soon, you'll have to wait for the next series, designed by a new set of artists. But for a sizable contingent of over-18 consumers, the phrase doesn't have salacious connotations: this group's toys of choice are plastic figurines with names like Bearbricks and Devilrobots, designed by Asian artists inspired in equal parts by science fiction and comic books... enjoy the article here or here. Do you think it hurts the feelings of your important documents to be transported around in your dull, gray, lifeless USB flash memory? It certainly does. Just because they're random articulations of binary digits doesn't mean they're oblivious to the siren song of fashion, you know. Humor them for a bit with these mimobots, funky USB devices from Boston-based mimoco. Nine designs are available from these crazy guys, from the blood-soaked and downright nasty (but nice to data) Magma to the so-cute-you-wish-it-wasn't-just-a-hunk-of-plastic Jolibear. Prices start at $69.99 for the 256MB devices and go up for 512MB, 1GB, and 2GB models. Run to lab.mimoco.com, and give your files their time in the sun.
Part extraterrestrial, part extra data storage, mimobots are definitely not ordinary USB drives. The anime-inspired memory sticks are limited-edition designer toys meant to complement - rather than clutter - your desktop. Created by Evan Blaustein and his Brookline, Massachusetts-based mimoco, the two-inch tall 'bots look like fantastic characters from far-off planets. But pop off their heads and stick them into your Mac or PC's USB port and they're ready to serve you here on Earth, saving your text files, pictures, games - whatever - in their 256MB to 2GB brains. Mimoco plans to release new mimobots in small batches of 250 to 500 every two months. The latest series, which includes Galaxor (pictured), also comes preloaded with animated movies and mini-games from the UK-based Peskimo design studio.

"Peanut butter and jelly. Rice and beans. Collectible figures and flash drives? Mimoco's figure drive has arrived. Plug it in, and the butt lights up! The memory drive, which comes in different memory sizes, gets the thumbs-up from Devil Robots' Shinichiro Kitai, and this piece has a strong Takashi Murakami influence. But in the end, this won't do anything to change the perception that toys are for geeks."
"Calling all Flash-y collectors: mimobots are here!...but in limited quantities. These 2-inch designer flash memory drives from mimoco; the Cosmos and goSeries (ta2b is featured here) are designed by Yahid "Serial Killer" Rodriguez, and are available in 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB [and 2GB](Hi-Speed USB 2.0) capabilities. These playful ports are loaded with bonus material, like DJ DB's exclusive mix on the Cosmos series. Future releases are slated to include animation and games."
"Sure, flash drives are great. It's handy to have something the size of your nose that holds works in progress, especially if you are a web designer and have smaller files. But like so many other technologies, the function came before the form, long before. Flash drives are generally designed with the year-2000 i-theme - see thru plastic, an LED, etc. They were used, no doubt, but it was never really fun. The designers at Mimoco knew this, and in 2004 set out on a memory mission that became a small revolution. They're USB flash drives - no, they're super cute vinyl figures - both! Mimobots store from 256MB to 2GB of crap. At just over 2" tall, they're easy to stick anywhere, just like their uglier forefathers. Designer Yahid Rodriguez killed the design, with the pictured goSeries ready for a winter launch. mimobots.com"
"Based in Boston, Mimoco is a designer toy studio that also dabbles in consumer electronics. Their Mimobots are vinyl creatures that pack a lot of power: Flash memory drives in 256MB, 512MB, or 1GB sizes that are compatible with Macs or PCs. Shown here is Isadore Mimobot, created with Mexican graphic designer Yahid Rodriguez. 2.4 in. tall; $69.95 - $139.95 www.mimoco.com"

"Hailing from the planet blooh (located in galaxy 4210), Mimobots have been living harmoniously since the time of no age. Why you should care: they have extraordinary memory - 256MB, 512MB and 1GB to be exact. They come in limited quantities of 250 to 1,000 units, are hi-speed USB 2.0 and are both Windows and Mac compatible. Prices range from $69.95 to $139.95 depending on the capacity. Future series will include character-related media content such as animation, games and music as well as new designs from artists around the world. If you haven't figured it out, you use these to save and carry your personal electronic data. mimoco.com"
"Saving your data has never looked cuter. Mimobots, the new uberly-cool USB flash drive designed by urban artist Yahid Rodriguez, have journeyed a long way from home (the galaxy 4210 to be exact) to add some fun to the electronic revolution. The funky and functional creatures, from the Cosmo and upcoming Go series, are hi-speed 2.0 USB and available in very limited quantities - only between 250 and 1,000 are up for adoption. These feisty little critters work with both Windows and Mac and come in three drive sizes: 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB. Priced between $69.95 and $139.95, it's well worth it to stash all your info in style. Oh, and to get you revved up while saving and storing, each Mimobot from the Cosmo series comes preloaded with exclusive original music mixes by DJ DB.
